Bladder Cancer

Presence of blood in urine is a grave sign. Ultrasound examination may reveal a bladder tumor. Sometimes these tumors may be found during the evaluation for urinary infection, or sometimes they may be found incidentally.

TURBT (Transurethral resection of bladder tumor)

In this no-cut procedure, a scope is passed into the urinary bladder and tumor is removed, without any incision over the skin. A urologist is able to remove the whole tumor in almost all the cases, and in some cases when the disease is in its infancy, this may be the only surgery needed by the patient. The resected tumor is later analyzed by a pathologist, who reports the grade and severity of the tumor.

Radical Cystectomy (Complete Removal of Urinary Bladder)

This procedure may be performed if the patient is found to have high risk disease or extensive disease. In this procedure the urinary bladder is remove completely and a short segment of intestines is used to construct new passage of urine. This new passage may be attached to the natural opening (so that the patient can pass urine through natural opening), or it may be made on the belly (patient passes urine through an opening over the belly, into a bag attached to the skin). This surgery may be done by open technique or with the use of keyhole incisions. Patient may need chemotherapy only if the disease is extensive, as revealed by the complete evaluation by the urologist.
